What is Professional Supervision?

Hello you’ve landed on my page. Welcome.

What is Professional Supervision?

Professional supervision is the professional relationship between you - ‘the supervisee’ and me ‘the supervisor’. It is a space for you reflect on your work (practice) and how to make it better. We work together in an environment that is both supportive and challenging. It allows people the opportunity to talk openly with a professional within a structured framework.

It enables participants to unpack issues and find new ways of thinking about themes and problems that are part of professional work.

Shohet describes it this way. “Professional Supervision is a collaborative relationship [“the working alliance”], in which the supervisee attends to their work through intentional, focussed and reflective conversation with the supervisor.

The end result of supervision is learning, transformational learning.

What are the benefits of supervision:

  • improved work and self care

  • better organisational culture particularly co-worker relationships

  • professional development

  • continuous development for the wider profession

  • intervene where client welfare is at risk.

  • ensure ethical guidelines and professional standards are maintained.

It affords supervisees with the ability to develop professional relationships with colleagues that may last a lifetime. In addition, having trainees who are further along in supervision be able to explain content to others or model appropriate skills is a way to develop these skills.
